Water sports are, hands down, one of the best activities to do in Greece! Water sports on Thassos Island will give you an adrenaline boost and offer you unforgettable experiences!
The best part is that you can do water sports either alone, or with your friends and family!
Enjoying the sea is something you’re going to do a lot of on Thassos. There are so many wonderful coves and beaches right around the island – some pocket-sized and others larger and more organised. It seems wrong to single any out, but let’s try. Aliki Beach, on the southeastern tip, captures the very essence of the island – shimmeringly beautiful water, a backdrop of pine and olive trees and even an ancient marble quarry nearby.
Elsewhere, there is Marble Beach – a small, isolated bay to the northeast, with tiny white pebbles and marble fragments in the sea giving the water its exotic colour. The umbrellas and a beach bar are a testament to its growing popularity, but nothing detracts from the beauty. Just up the coast are Glyfoneri with golden sand, pine trees and taverna at one end. Back on the south coast is beautiful Paradise Beach, just below the Monastery of the Archangel Michael. It takes something to be given such a name on Thassos, but it more than does it justice.
The coast of Salonikios Beach is located in the area of Astris, 7km away from Potos and 48km far from Limenas. It is sandy- in and out-with crystal waters. The Salonikios coast is an organized beach prominent for its serenity.
Lastly, Rosogkremos Beach and Trypiti Beach are small sandy beaches, suitable for families with children but also interesting places for snorkelling.
Ipsarion is the highest peak on Thassos (1204m) on the same name mountain.
In order to walk to the top of the mountain the best place to start from is Potamia. It will take you about 3 hours walking at a normal pace to reach the top. The way is clearly marked, paths are narrow and steep so you should be very careful.
The important thing is to start early in the morning because as soon as the sun shines brighter, the view from Ipsarion is not that clear. Another reason why you should go from the Potamia side is that nature is more picturesque.
If you are not a fan of walking but you would like to see Ipsarion, another option is to go from the Maries village. It is 11km away from the top of the Ipsarion mountain.
Limenas quite simply means “the port”. It is the capital of the island and is commonly called “Thassos Town”. It’s the home of the main harbour from which you can easily travel to and from mainland Greece via the ferry port of Keramoti.
The village offers a wide variety of attractions and activities, many more than can be undertaken in one short holiday! It is in the northerly part of the island, surrounded by the densely wooded pine green mountains, and large swathes of olive groves, making the whole a very picturesque setting.
The Archaeological Museum is accommodated in a building of 1935 which was renovated and expanded in the years 1989-1999. In an exhibition of 2376 sm with 18 galeries and 1700 objects you will admire collections from the 7th century B.C. to the 7th century A.D. In the museum, there is available an underground space with ruins of the classical and the roman era which are discernible but not visited.
The museum is the most significant of its kind in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. There are exposed samples of ceramics, sculpture, coins, inscription and statues. Out of the exhibits, Kouros stands out at a height of 3.5 meters, along with the statues of Andrianos and Pegasus. There are also men’s and women’s heads as well as anastatic representations.
